Study on Relationships among Maternal Attachment Representations, Maternal Caregiving Behaviors, and Infant Attachment Classifications

Abstract

|
|
The purpose of this study was to investigate (1) the relatedness between maternal caregiving behaviors and infant’s attachment patterns and (2) the relatedness between maternal attachment representation and maternal caregiving behaviors. The subjects were forty 12-15 month old infants and their mothers. The Adult Attachment Interview(Main & Goldwyn, 1984) was used to assess mother’s attachment representation. The Strange Situation(Ainsworth, 1978) was used to classify infant’s attachment relationship. As the results, Maternal caregiving behaviors(positive affect, intrusive behavior, affective errors) were related to maternal attachment representation and infant attachment classifications.
